| Part 3- Camino Real |
|
|
| 04:00pm 24/06/2008 |
| |
We stayed in a hotel called Camino Real. It was other names once (so said our gay bartender friend Eduardo), but now it is owned by Camino Real.
It was old and beautiful. Established in 1912. Apparently they once sold cattle there. On the 2nd floor. So JP and I ghosthunted for cows. Cows that said ... Mooooooooooooo.
And sheep dogs. I thought I saw sheep dogs. I kept expecting to see them from the corner of my eye.
Anyway, so I forgot to take pictures of the room. But we didn't spend much time there.
We did spend time in the dome. Here is JP at The Dome Bar. The lobby entrance is in the distance. You pass through the lobby and into the Dome area.

Here is the bar

Here is "the Dome" above it.

We sat there for a good few hours. And ordered some pub food before heading up stairs to prepare for the show.

So after we rented our 2008 bright red Chevy Impala, we started cruising Montana Avenue, nodding our head at fellow Texans and on a search for a fix. Actually, we were sort of jet lagged and confused and looked like tourists. I love maps. JP loves driving. And yet we aren't a good team, cuz I like telling him where to go and he loves being a rebel.
So we ended up in far Westside El Paso, by the mall and Stateline casino as we searched for a restaurant called Avila. It was in one of the brochure zines as “the best” and “authentic” Mexican cuisine. We did find the ultimate in authentic and the ultimate in the best Mexican restaurant the next day, which is good because otherwise JP would still be there looking for the chili rellino that makes him sweat and shake his head and close his eyes.
Instead we found Avila, and it was okay.
Then we went back south/west to the downtown area. And then, omg. Then it happened.
Well, first we argued about what JP was doing because he tends to get frustrated and drive in circles and I tend to tune out until I’m like: What are we doing?
So we drive through downtown a little and it’s a little like we are already in Mexico. So many of those shops with frills of Catholic imagery and items. It’s so exciting! All the Catholics. (Well, to me anyway—they are so steeped in ritual). So anyway, we drive to our hotel, which is located DIRECTLY across from The Plaza. Not just directly, I mean there is no street between, just a courtyard and the valet area. And there’s a giant Tour bus out there and we joke about seeing Tom Waits.
So I’m like: let’s just get the valet and go in. And JP is like: that’s like a couple bucks! I will park us. So we go around the block a few times and I am like: sure. this is worth saving the dough.
But then, omg.
So THEN we come around the corner again to the front of the hotel (and courtyard and The Plaza) and I see a party walking towards the tour bus and before I can say to myself, “I wonder if Tom Waits is in that group”—THERE HE IS! And there we are. We could have made a 30 degree turn and plowed into him and his sons!
But we didn’t. Instead I tapped JP, pointed and grunted.
And JP said, “I wonder if that is—Hey! That’s Tom!”
And then he was in the bus and we were sitting in our car in the middle of the valet turning thing.
It was awesome. And I don’t remember entering the hotel or any of the other stuff cuz I lost the power to think or speak.
Seriously, I just turned to JP every few seconds and said: Oh my God. That was Tom Waits! That was TOM WAITS!
And it was awesome.
I don’t have any pictures yet (coming soon … the Dome Bar, where we spent most our time, our pics of the stage and Tom, some chalk drawings, and JP’s fav. Authentic and best Mexican food place … including a picture of his food).
I hate that we don’t have a camera btw.
The End. |

| El Paso Trip part 1 of some unholy number |
|
|
| 12:15am 24/06/2008 |
| |
mood: sleepy music: Fannin St. (b/c of Ayn's comment)
|
So I was in a super bad mood that morning and barking a lot at JP. Something about not making coffee.
Then we got on the plane (which said it was straight to El Paso, but then stopped in Phoenix for 20 minutes, odd)
And we decided because Southwest has that terrible "Line up and fight for your seat" routine that their new tagline should be: Southwest, Only the Strong Shall Survive.
Southwest, OSSS for short.
That became our theme.
Oh lookie, we got to the runway first. Southwest, OSSS.
Oh! Our pilot is the most drunkest. Southwest, OSSS.
But a group of college football players boarded on our trip back and we realized we might not survive.
It was a good time tho.
On our ride from Phoenix, we met an our age neo-hippy named Mark. His lady friend was named DJ. And they were seeing Tom Waits too. So that was fun. We also saw them (and chatted) at the rental car service line. They were going to be our new BFFS, but we never saw them again. Which is fine cuz the guy was sort of sensitive pony tail man. With lots of rubberbands in his hair. More than necessary.
And we ended up getting a rental car. For the 'ell of it. With a GPS. Which was fun. And adventurous.
That's all for now. Tanya tired. Ambien kicking in in 3, 2, 1 ...

Here's Tom's band members and a picture (not from us). That pix is from Hoist That Rag. I know, cuz I was there (and JP recorded it on his cell & I've watched it many times).
Vincent Henry, (out of retirement) Sax and harmonica Patrick Warren, keyboards Sean Ford-Young, bass Omar Torrez, guitar Casey Waits, drums Sullivan Waits, congos

| Tom Waits- CHECK |
|
|
| 05:55pm 22/06/2008 |

mood: excited music: Hoist That Rag- on JP's cell phone video
|
I've so much to tell. But I'll tell you the best parts and then write the rest up tomorrow.
1) Tom Waits is so awesome. He's so animated. And mythic and mystic. He's a mystic being. He's a story. And a story-teller. I loved watching him. He stomps and sways and crouches and is crazy. You can see him be a crazy version of himself. And his band was tops. And the music. And the setting. And the stuff. The laughing! He's so funny. Tells terrible jokes and gets away with it. But not like overly so. Not rock-star selving-- like you know it's a character. He plays himself for fun. and for crazy.
2) We saw him as he entered his tour bus from the hotel (the same hotel we were staying at). And I literally lost the ability to speak. I just tapped JP and grunted and pointed. Something could have happened and I would have been okay not seeing the rest of the show cuz I saw him. 20 feet away.
3) In a totally appropriate and the most opportune of times JP yelled "We love you Tom!" and he said, "I love you too, babe" and everyone in our section cheered for JP. It was very cute.
Ok, more to come about the fab hotel, and how really something El Paso is and our trip to the winery (we buy wine now ... I wish I could remember why it was so good) and our gay bartender friend Eduardo, and the rest of our adventures.
It was a fabulous vacation. I love these jaunts-- as much as I want a beach and nothing to do for a week, but drink ice-cold cervasas, I love a good short jaunt to El Paso. It's exciting finding things to do somewhere that nobody knows or goes to and being pleasantly surprised by everything. And JP is always so agreeable and affectionate on vacation (not that he isn't normally), but he is so ... Aquarius free at these things. And we buy wine and Oohh! Ahhh! over mummified chupacrabras at the downtown pawn shop.
And ... Tom Waits! |

I just had the worst burrito in history. One of the worst. Like the corrupt political leader that slays children worst kind of burrito. Ugh. Not like worst natural disaster burrito or like worst burn in hell burrito. No, like the only way a human can be powerful and evil to a nation kind of burrito.
****
And in a moment I am going to catalog the rooms in my house by object and what should be done with said object. Options: Sell? Throw out? Tidy Up? or Storage. Gotta get this place organized.
****
Anyway, I'm really here to tell you my dream. I hesitated doing so because dreams rarely matter except to the person having them. But there's something about this one, that is ... storytellingy. Yes, I've been watching Buffy again. Storytellingy.
I posted it in my writing journal, since I kinda got into it ... go here |

Um, I took some pictures of Spookytown before tearing it down this year. And this was my worst Spookytown yet. I didn't have time to space it out well or add the little touches I love so much: hay near the pumpkin patch, fog near the factory/lab, haunting lights and spooky webbing throughout. So yeah. I only used half of the little accessories I have. Still ... here it is/was:

You have no excuse not to make it. Even those of you out of state.
And for your viewing pleasure, here is this year's summer bbq flyer! WOOT! (I'd just like to say I feel I've outdone myself this time. This is the fourth of bitchin flyers, and I'm not sure I can top it. I'll have to post all of them at some time ... so we can discuss creativity, composition, functionality, etc. La!)

Here are just a few random dog park pics I took. I love the little dogs and the bitch ass great dane. It was a VERY busy day today. Lots of scraps and barking. And packs of dogs ran after every ball that was thrown. Some dogs were trying to get it on. Others were giddy. Despite the crowd and mud, we had a good time.

| Voodoo at the Dog Park |
|
|
| 03:33pm 02/04/2006 |
| |
Voodoo is interested in running and playing ball. He's not very good at ball and doesn't bring it back, but he enjoys himself (see tongue hanging out). Voodoo rarely interacts with others. Sometimes he's pissy about his ball and growls, but for the most part he just ignores all dogs and they ignore him. The ground was so muddy today, but he had a good time.
Sorry a few of these are out of focus-- most of what I took I deleted ... they are all brown/black/tan blurs. There's only four or five photos. At least he was too preoccupied to run away from my camera though!
